Good news for vegans – Subway patties, which used to contain milk powder, will be suitable for vegans within a month.

Leader Products say “We are now manufacturing the vegetarian patties with no milk products.  There is no change in the product texture or flavour, but the patties are now suitable for vegans.  Please allow another month to ensure all of the old product has moved through the stores, or you can ask them to check the carton label – the new product has no milk solids listed in the ingredients list.”

Just when you thought good sense had prevailed, the controversial Catcha Cray arcade style game with live crayfish is back – but modified! SAFE was delighted to announce in February that the arcade-style machine called Catcha Cray, that treated live animals like stuffed toys, had been banned following an intense SAFE campaign.

catcha cray protest

“The machines used a metal claw to subject the crayfish to undue stress, torment and injury, with the catching and handling process sometimes resulting in limbs being torn off or damaged. Most New Zealander’s were disgusted that such a thing was allowed,” says SAFE campaign officer Mandy Carter.

A SAFE demonstration, which attracted huge media exposure and an intervention by the SPCA deeming the machines illegal under the Animal Welfare Act, resulted in bars with Catcha Cray machines being ordered to discontinue using them.

Game modified and sadly back!
However, the game has since been modified by dividing the tank in half with perspex. One side contains live crayfish, while the other side contains plastic ones. Punters will attempt to ‘catch’ from the side with plastic crayfish, and be rewarded with a live crayfish if they succeed.

“We are disappointed to learn that Catcha Cray machines will be appearing in bars again. Although the crayfish will no longer be cruelly tormented with a metal claw, SAFE still has concerns, as the cramped conditions and noisy bars are not appropriate places for animals. A caught crayfish amongst a crowd of drunken revellers is also of serious concern as they are at great risk of abuse. There is also the issue of how the crays are being killed once they have been taken home,” says Mandy.

SAFE would advise any bars approached to house a Catcha Cray machine, to consider carefully whether they wish to be associated with these machines. SAFE also encourages people who see one at a bar to not to use them, and to register a complaint with bar staff.

DISTURBING NEW PIG CRUELTY FOOTAGE REVEALS NO CHANGE TO PIG WELFARE

9 April 2010

The cruelty of the New Zealand pig industry has once again been exposed as disturbing new footage on TV One’s Close Up programme tonight (9th April 2010) reveals there is no change to the way tens of thousands of pigs are being reared on factory farms.

Animal advocacy group SAFE says assurances from the New Zealand Pork Industry Board that pig welfare is being taken seriously are nothing more than hollow talk. Almost one year after comedian Mike King exposed pig cruelty on factory farms in New Zealand, pigs continue to endure a living hell, says the group.

Members of Open Rescue, who supplied SAFE with the original footage, visited three Waikato piggeries last week and filmed appalling scenes of injured, dead and dying piglets and sows confined in tiny farrowing crates, lying in their own excrement in filthy, fly-infested sheds. The group also found dead piglets, some of which had been cannibalised, scattered outside or dumped in bins.

“This new footage reveals that the pig industry has failed to rectify serious welfare problems despite unprecedented public outrage over pig cruelty. Promises by the NZ Pork Industry Board to undertake animal welfare audits are nothing short of utter nonsense and their failure to take action to relieve the suffering of tens of thousands of pigs is reprehensible,” says SAFE campaign director Hans Kriek.

The National Animal Welfare Advisory Committee (NAWAC) has recommended a phase-out of sow stalls (pregnant sows confined in crates) but it will continue to allow farrowing crates, despite these crates being in breach of New Zealand animal welfare legislation.

“SAFE is appalled that NAWAC has no intention of banning farrowing crates, and will urge the Minister of Agriculture, David Carter, not to sign off a code that fails to uphold the Animal Welfare Act and allows the ongoing suffering of pigs,” says Mr Kriek.

Public submissions on the draft code can be made until April 16 and SAFE urges people to have their say against factory farm cruelty.
Information on how to make a submission can be found on http://www.lovepigs.org.nz

Cubicle style housing of dairy cows is nothing new in Europe, but animal welfare and environmental groups in New Zealand are up in arms that farmers in the Mackenzie basin are following suit.

The SPCA say they are horrified at the “factory dairy farming” plans of three South Island companies and are calling on the public to take a stand against the applications. Read more …

Recently New Zealand Open Rescue saved another two piglets from a lifetime of caged suffering. These two new girls were rescued from a typically disgusting intensive pig farm during an investigation. The rescued girls have gone to live with LouLou and Lola (the piglets we saved last year in honor of Mother’s Day).

LouLou and Lola are doing really well since their rescue. They’ve grown quite a lot but they still have the same personalities as when they were tiny rescued piglets. Lola (from the bathing scene in the Mother’s Day video) is still quite shy and gentle and LouLou is still really outgoing with an ‘in your face’ attitude.

Their mum tells us that their favourite thing to do is play soccer together with an old soccer ball. They spend hours playing together in a muddy wallow butting the ball backwards and forwards to each other with their noses. The games can get quite elaborate and competitive we’re told!

All of the girls spend most of their days roaming an apple orchard together munching on the apples that are scattered all over the ground. They live happily with a variety of other rescued animals including calves and ex-battery hens.

The new girls have been named Hannah and Montana (not by us!) and have settled into their new home really well.

Please remember that while Open Rescue can save the lives of a few animals, YOU personally can help to save the lives of many, many more. Use your consumer power and say no to pork. By not financially supporting the pork industry, you are directly helping to stop the suffering.

According to a new study, fat from red meat and dairy products is associated with increased risk of pancreatic cancer. As part of the National Institutes of Health-AARP Diet and Health Study, researchers followed and analyzed the diets of more than 525,000 participants to determine whether there is an association between dietary fat and pancreatic cancer. This same study found no association between plant-food fat and pancreatic cancer.
