NZ Vegetarian Society Serves Up a Stacked October

October is the vegetarian calendar's biggest month, and the NZVS is going all in. To kick off the celebrations, public voting for the annual Think Kind Student Competition commences on October 1st, World Vegetarian Day.

The Think Kind Student Competition encourages students in Years 0 to 13 to explore what it means to care for animals, protect the planet, and support one another through creative projects that show small actions can make a big difference. This year saw a high calibre of entries.

Voting for the finalists opens to the public on the NZVS website from October 1st. The winner of the People's Choice award will receive a $1,000 grand prize for their school, thanks to Kiwiherb, and will be announced on World Vegan Day, November 1st.

It's a great opportunity for local communities to rally around their students and support the next generation.

This year’s finalists will receive awesome prize packs from our generous sponsors:

NZVS is excited to announce that 45 libraries around the country are creating displays to celebrate World Vegetarian Month.

Simultaneously, the 21-Day Plant-Based Challenge launches on October 1st. Participants will receive recipes, nutritional support, and a free year-long NZVS membership, complete with discounts on Vegetarian Approved and Vegan Certified products. The challenge is designed to highlight the benefits of going plant-based as well as how delicious it can be!

The last exciting World Vegetarian Month announcement for NZVS is that we have partnered with four great brands: Clinicians, Holistic Hair, Plant Foods NZ and Red Seal; on a series of giveaways throughout the month. Followers on social media will have the chance to win epic prize packs from each brand.

With Think Kind voting, the 21-Day Plant-Based Challenge, and a month of giveaways, there's never been a better time to get involved and see just how easy, and rewarding, plant-based living can be.

"This month is a good opportunity to promote healthy living, sustainability, and kindness to animals. It is important to encourage everyone to see how vegetarian values can help the world. Now more than ever, we have seen the impact human activities have on the environment, we all have a responsibility to create a kinder, healthier world through our choices." Says NZVS President Julia Clements.

About World Vegetarian Month:

World Vegetarian Month runs from World Vegetarian Day on 1 October, through Animal Day on 4 October, to World Vegan Day on 1 November. First established in 1977 by the North American Vegetarian Society, it now raises awareness of the ethical, environmental, health and humanitarian benefits of a vegetarian lifestyle. For those new to vegetarianism, it serves as an enticement to give meatless fare a try (even for a day) and learn about its many benefits. And, of course, it’s the perfect occasion for vegetarians and those already moving towards plant-based diets to celebrate their healthy, compassionate food choices.

While vegetarianism is growing fast in New Zealand, meat-free eating has deep roots elsewhere, from Buddhism in 5th century India to China's 2,000-year history with tofu.

About the NZ Vegetarian Society:

The NZ Vegetarian Society was started in 1943 to educate, encourage and support all those interested in the vegetarian way of life. NZVS strives to grow vegetarianism across Aotearoa, reducing cruelty to animals, improving human health, protecting our environment, and preserving the world's precious resources. Whether you're simply cutting back on meat or fully committed to a vegetarian lifestyle, the NZVS welcomes you.
