Vegetarian Living NZ – Winter Issue Out Now
EDITORIAL
As we move into winter, this time of year often brings a natural shift in routine. We tend to spend more time indoors, gravitate towards comforting meals, and become more aware of the importance of taking care of our physical and mental wellbeing.
So, it’s fitting that we begin this issue with a practical and informative feature on winter wellness and immune health on pages 2 & 3. Exploring key nutrients such as vitamin B12, iron and vitamin D, along with the important connection between gut health and immunity, the article outlines evidence-based guidance on supporting wellbeing through a balanced vegetarian or vegan diet. Readers will also find comforting seasonal meal ideas and practical tips for maintaining health during winter.
On pages 6 & 7, this issue also takes readers on a culinary journey through the Balkans, the culturally rich region of Southeast Europe, with one of London’s biggest plant-based Instagram food stars, Philip Zecevic, known online as phitzee. From recreating nostalgic family dishes in plant-based form, to building a global following around vegan Balkan cuisine, Philip shares how culture and connection continue to shape his approach to food.
We then step inside the kitchen of Chef Anna Valentine on pages 10 & 11, whose recipes have inspired Vegetarian Living NZ readers for many years. Anna talks about her journey as a chef, educator and cookbook author. She also shares practical advice for making plant-based cooking both easy and satisfying.
On page 14, we look at the passing of legislation to end commercial greyhound racing in New Zealand and what this major shift means for animal welfare in Aotearoa. As the country transitions, many greyhounds will soon be looking for loving forever homes. This heartfelt feature explores the importance of adoption, while sharing insights about the gentle nature of these dogs and how readers can find out more about adopting a retired greyhound.
Finally, we feature an in-depth article from Doctors For Nutrition on pages 16 & 17, exploring the growing impact of type 2 diabetes in Aotearoa and the powerful role lifestyle medicine can play in prevention, management and even remission. The feature outlines practical and evidence-based advice for supporting long-term metabolic health.
I hope you enjoy this winter edition and find something within these pages that inspires, informs or resonates with you.
